According to Iversen, Buur, 2002, characteristics of a good design game are (p.25):
- The material (board and pieces) should be inspiring.
- There should be rules to start the game, but they must not be rigid.
- You should have the option of expanding your role.
- You need to make bold moves.
- Respectful turn-taking is crucial.
Also, Iversen, Buur, 2002 state that qualities of a successful game are, "We play, because it is fun to play, because the game takes surprising turns of events, and because it is a challenge to bring the game to an end." (p.25)
