Abascal, J., et al. (2004). The use of guidelines to automatically verify Web accessibility. Univ Access Inf Soc, 3, 71-79. (edit) The article focuses on a tool, EvalIris, that automatically checks the accessibility of the website. One interesting feature is that the tool checks the websites based on a list of guidelines that can easily be updated and changed. The author claims that this is an important feature because guidelines are frequently being revised and new sets of guidelines are constantly being created. However this claim is questionable because the most standardized guidelines are static. For example, the WAI’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines have not changed since 1999. The authors assert that although guidelines have problems, they still present the best method for creating assessable websites. The new tool was able to detect more problems than other popular evaluation tools, specifically Bobby and TAW. |
